What is Pancreatic Collection Drainage?
Pancreatic Collection Drainage is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove fluid collections, abscesses, or pseudocysts that form around the pancreas due to pancreatitis, trauma, or surgery. This procedure helps prevent complications like infection, pain, and organ dysfunction by using a catheter to drain the collected fluid under image guidance (ultrasound, CT scan, or endoscopy).

When is Pancreatic Collection Drainage Recommended?

  • Pancreatic pseudocysts (fluid-filled sacs forming after pancreatitis)

  • Infected pancreatic necrosis (dead tissue causing severe infections)

  • Abscesses or fluid buildup after pancreatic surgery

  • Severe or recurrent pancreatitis with fluid collections

  • Abdominal pain, nausea, or digestive issues due to fluid pressure

How is Pancreatic Collection Drainage Performed?

  1. Preparation:

    • The patient undergoes blood tests and imaging scans (CT, MRI, or ultrasound) to locate the fluid collection.

    • Fasting for 6–8 hours is required before the procedure.

    • Local anesthesia and mild sedation are administered for comfort.

  2. Catheter or Endoscopic Drainage Placement:

    • Using CT, ultrasound, or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guidance, a thin needle is inserted into the pancreatic fluid collection.

    • A small drainage catheter is placed through the skin or endoscopically, allowing the fluid to drain into an external bag or the stomach/intestines.

  3. Completion & Recovery:

    • The procedure takes 30–60 minutes.

    • The catheter remains in place until the fluid is fully drained, which may take a few days to weeks.

    • The patient is monitored for complications and may need hospitalization if the infection is severe.

Benefits of Pancreatic Collection Drainage

  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery

  • Reduces pain, infection risk, and digestive issues

  • Prevents complications like sepsis and organ failure

  • Alternative to major surgery for fluid removal
