What is Abdominal Collection Drainage?
Abdominal Collection Drainage is a minimally invasive radiology procedure used to remove infected fluid, pus, or abscesses from the abdomen. This procedure is performed under image guidance (ultrasound or CT scan) to ensure precise catheter placement, helping relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and promote faster healing.

When is Abdominal Collection Drainage Recommended?

  • Intra-abdominal abscesses caused by infection or surgery

  • Pancreatic fluid collections (pseudocysts)

  • Post-surgical fluid buildup leading to complications

  • Peritonitis or infected ascitic fluid

  • Liver, kidney, or pelvic abscesses

  • Unresolved abdominal infections not responding to antibiotics

How is Abdominal Collection Drainage Performed?

  1. Preparation:

    • Blood tests and imaging scans (ultrasound, CT, or MRI) are conducted to locate the collection.

    • The patient fasts for 6–8 hours before the procedure.

    • Local anesthesia and mild sedation are administered for comfort.

  2. Needle Insertion & Catheter Placement:

    • Using ultrasound or CT scan guidance, a thin needle is inserted through the skin into the fluid collection.

    • A small drainage catheter is placed, allowing the fluid to be drained into an external collection bag.

  3. Completion & Recovery:

    • The procedure takes 30–60 minutes.

    • The catheter remains in place until the collection is fully drained, which may take a few days to weeks.

    • Patients are monitored and may need hospitalization if the infection is severe.

Benefits of Abdominal Collection Drainage

  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery

  • Effective relief from pain, infection, and swelling

  • Prevents serious complications like sepsis

  • Can be performed as an alternative to surgery
